Had same problem in our 89 535i.  Didn't want to remove IP myself,
so took it to dealer who also removed a spider that had somehow
crawled in and died!  They replaced bulb, and odometer and trip odometer
worked . . . for about a month.  Remember how the Fonz used to
whack the juke box for free tunes?  Now we whack the top of the dash
above the IP when the lights go out, or sometimes a rap to the front glass
of the IP, and voila! lights come back on!  Not sure if there's a Tech =
Bulletin,=20
but assume that the bulbs do not seat properly and loosen.  The whack=20
closes the circuit (at least temporarily).  Try it, you might like it!
