Odometer/Trip odometer lights out

Please let me know if you are familiar with the following problem; the car
in question is 94 325IS (E36). 

The (electronic LED) odometer and trip odometer do not light up. They seem
to work, and can be (barely) seen in the instrument cluster light at night.

I'd like to know what the fix is, if it is a common problem, and if there is
a recall/service bulletin for it.
