Wanted E30 Purchasing Advice

Isn't there a big difference between an '89 and '90?

My '91 318i has the M42 engine.  I thought both '90 and 
'91 E30s had this feature.  The M42 engine is used in the
E36 3-series(92-97/98)

It's typical to see BMW use the new generation engine in an 
older generation body for 1 - 2 years.  I believe the '98 
328i had the E46 engine as well.  Is this correct?
