Advise on buying a used 318is

Fellow BMWers,

I am trading up my 1984 323i w/137K miles to a 1991 318is w/88k miles. I am
about to close the deal and I would appreciate your kind help in resolving
these two doubts:

1. Will there be a big difference in acceleration & speed?
2. What should I especially check in the 318is?
