[E30] CDplayer upgrade suggestions

Greetings,

I have a 1986 325e with the stock stereo and would like suggestions
for a CD player upgrade. I'm not particular about having a tape player,
and so was thinking along the lines of an in-dash CD player now, followed
by a changer in the future because of financial considerations.

I've been told that Alpine stereos are the way to go. Any suggestions 
vis-a-vis Alpine vs. other manufacturers ? Also, would most Alpine 
stereos fit right in (the stock player is an Alpine if I'm not mistaken..) ?

Thanks for all your suggestions ... I'd love to hear from folks who've gone
this route.
