2002 car stereo project

my simple little cd installation for my '72 2002 is turning out to be a
nightmare.  my old player, a no frills blaupunkt, was working fine until it
suddenly wouldn't put out any sound.  all the functions worked fine but no
sound was produced and the speakers never faded in and out so i figured that
they weren't blown.  since the unit was past warranty i bought a new one, a
sony.  guess what? same problem.  actually music came out for a few brief
seconds but that was it.  and now my turn signals don't work.  the cd
player, which is just a single cd dash unit, is connected to both the
battery and to the fuse box via a pin reserved for the original car radio.
the fuse connected to this pin is also connected to the wipers which work
fine and the brake lights, which may or may not work, i don't know.  has
anyone had similar problems?  i just had a bunch of electrical work done
back in nov. '98 that solved a previous turn signal problem i was having
where the dash indicator would only illuminate once.  now nothing happens
and i still have no music.  help.
