E28 533i Heater Core Problem

It looks like the heater core in my 84 533i is leaking. When I turn on the
heater or defroster, I get a sweet smell and steam on the windows inside
the car.  Checking my Bentley manual,  looks like replacing the heater core
could be a real chore....Bentley doesn't address replacement.  So, I'm
asking for some insight from the Digest...I'm sure someone has had this
problem.  Anyone fixed this problem with some kind of stop leak
solution...or is a replacement the only solution?  I've done some searching
for a write up on replacing the core but came up empty.

I'm open to suggestions.
