Having missed a few Digests, I don't know who originally posted this
question. Duane gave good advice about having BMW NA check the
records on the car to see if it was damaged. I know that BMW NA often
auctions these cars off to the dealers. I don't know that any are
"consigned" to the dealers.
In Sept. 1988 I bought a 1988 535i with 12K miles that had been a "BMW
NA Exec. Car". I had similar thoughts, who knows what kind of
"executives" drove it, or more important, HOW they drove it? But I bought
it for about $28K when new ones had stickered over $37K, and owned it
for over 4 years. It was one great car, I almost wish I still owned it. So,
not all exec. cars are a bad experience waiting to happen, but the
potential is certainly there for getting one that had been thrashed or
trashed.
If you have any doubt, have the car checked by your own mechanic
prior to purchase.
