Storing Tires

What is the recommended way to store tires mounted on wheels?  Stacked on
top of each other, or standing in a row?

Also, I was thinking of building a rectangular rack out of 2x4s and
mounting it on the wall.  The platform would not have a bottom, so the
tires would rest between the 2x4s.  Is this a bad way to store them?
