[E30 M3] catalyst restrictions?

How restrictive is the catalyst on the E30 M3?  I've noted that
the non-us E30 M3's that came without them averaged more HP than
US spec ones.  However, all aftermarket shops i've spoken with say
that the removal of the cat will actually degrade performance.

I'm mainly interested in high-end power, because I hardly ever
need more power in the low end - if I need power, I downshift.

The only drawback I can see is the possible changing of the 
flow characteristics, which might slightly upset the fuel ratios
(but then I could rechip for that).
