Variable Ratio Steering

Hi All,

BMW advertising claims variable ratio, variable assist steering on the 
E36 M3. Does anyone know how the variable ratio system works, from a 
technical standpoint? I've been trying to figure out how it might work, 
but all I can do is come up with systems that would never work out. Seems 
like a pretty tough design task to me.
