Hi Rob,
Did you check the components of your fuel system? I had the exact same
problems....but I have more problems that need fixing on my car.
I replaced the fuel filter (just to be sure it wasn't the culprit by
being clogged).
I replaced the fuel pressure regulator (cured the warm starting
problem).
I'm going to replace my fuel transfer pump (very little response at full
throttle the symptom as well as a lot of noise coming from the fuel
pump.)
I also used fuel additive to clean the fuel system up, and the clean off
the carbon deposits on the valves. VERY useful.
If you haven't replaced your fuel transfer pump (you have 2 pumps, the
main one is outside the gas tank and if that one goes, you DON'T rum;
and one inside, which is the transfer pump) run a test on it (Bentley
Manual has a good test). If it doesn't work, then it's probabaly a
culprit. What happens is that when the pump inside the gas tank goes,
the one outside has to pressurize the fuel system, and you get severe
fuel starvation at 1/8 tank (like NOO response at full throttle) and it
starts around 1/4 tank full. But otherwise the car will run ok.
Well, just take a look around your fuel system. Especially since your
car has 142k. Mine has 116k and the pump went (I think...I still need to
test it for voltage....etc.)]
About the valve clearances, you can check them to rule them out. But the
only thing they will screw up is the idle really. (Unless they're fully
screwed up and your not getting air into or out of the combustion
chamber, but I seriously doubt that.)
Anyways, good luck.
