e28/m30 semi-warm start problem

Once more, I seek the advice of total strangers whom I have, for some reason,
come to trust with my car...
'85 535i, 142k: Starts fine when cold (shut down for at least an hour.)
Starts fine within 10 minutes of being shut down. Cranks (perhaps overly
easily) for several seconds when warm, then idles VERY low for 2-3 seconds,
then everything A-OK. Is this possibly demonstrative of a lack of
compression? Also has "flat spot" from 2-3k rpm, then pulls quite strong
through 5500. (Runs like it should.) Marked increase in valve noise (almost
sloppy, busy ticking sound, for lack of better description) from 3-4k rpm.,
then goes away. No smoke on startup or after throttle-up following heavy
engine braking... Approx. 100 miles since new cam & rockers. Should I reset
vavle clearances? Help - my car is not performing to it's full ability, anI
am ashamed!
(Thanks - any ideas will be appreciated!)
Rob
