Subject: broken windshield - sorry to bring this up again

Sorry for the opening this thread again, but I recently cracked my
windshield. What's the scoop on replacement glass - what's the
preferred brands and by whom should I have it installed(dealer, body
 shop, glass comp.)

 Thanks,
 Nik

Nik: I assume that you don't have insurance for this. Then, be aware that
glass shops use "Sigla" if you let them. I am told that this is OEM but w/o
the "BMW" logo. I have used both Sigla and BMW and have not seen a difference
(although there may be one). If you must have "BMW" go to the dealer. The
dealer will sometimes work with you on price. He will probably farm
installation out to a glass shop whose labor rates are about half of his (he
makes his money on the parts, and the glass shop has more installation
expertise). The glass shop will have to go to the dealer or someone else for
ancillary parts (e.g., plastic trim pieces) anyway. No, you probably can't
(shouldn't) do it yourself. Gone are the days when soapy water and a string
can "zip" in a windshield.
