Being as the E28 and E24 use the P/S pump for both steering and braking
assist, I'd guess that if it's the pump, you'd also have high brake
pedal effort. If not, perhaps the culprit is the steering box or
associated hose(s)?

As far as evacuating the system, after pumping the brake pedal to
de-pressurize the "bomb", I'd imagine you can get the lion's share of
the fluid out by removing the low-pressure hose between the resorvoir
and the pump - atleast that's what I did on my E24.

BTW, I have found Steve D'G (www.ultimategarage.com)/home.html) to be a
reasonable and reliable source for P/S-related (and other) parts. Usual
