Sounds like a mixture of BS and mis-information they are giving you.  Go to
the 530i Home Page for detailed info on the M60 engine and related sulfur
issues (the 530i 3.0 liter V8 is cast from the same nikasil alloy as the 4.0
liter in the 540I).  The URL is

for background on the M60 engine, the other will take you to a page on the
530i site that contains all the detailed info you'll need on the M60 engine
tests.

The good news is that the 1) M60 engine test is free, and 2) the replacement
block if the tests indicate that you need one.
