The 5sp Getrag 260/6 on my 144K mile '86 E28 has been weird. 

The transmission seems to be working great. There is no 
extra noise in gears one through four. It doesn't slip out 
of any gear and works quite smoothly. The clutch seems to 
be working fine. With a change to red line no burnt 
transmission oil was encountered - in fact it looked
almost unused. The transmission mounts look good.

The problem is that 5th gear can't be used as gears start
mashing. The car goes into third and fourth gears okay.
However, while in third or fourth gear, if the gear shift 
knob is pushed to the right mashing gears occurs!?? It has 
been like this for about a year without the problem getting
worse or other problems appearing.

I don't think its the syncros. I was thinking perhaps the 
shifter linkage or shifter selector or something else is 
messed-up.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or have an idea of
what amiss???
