The clutch should not feel stiff. Sounds like one of the two "ears" on
the sides of the throw-out bearing has broken. This is very common on cars
that old. When it happens, the throw-out arm is pressing against just one
side of the throw-out bearing causing it to slide along the sleeve around
the trans input shaft.
Don't drive it that way, as assymetric thrust upon the pressure plate can
result in a lot of damage.
The car may still be worth buying, but the price should be reduced by $5-700
to acomodate the clutch repairs.
