635Csi starting problem

I have an 87 635Csi.  When it is started, whether cold or warm, it revs up
about to 3000 rpms.  I had this happen with my 87 528e.  It was fixed with
a new accelerator cable.  The 6-series's one looks OK.  Is there something
else it can be.
