Gutting the cats is indeed a bad idea, for the reasons you gave... plus:

	- it's really highly illegal in most places unless you're building
a track-only car
	- replacement cats are $$$ if the smog police demand that you "fix"
it -- and they *will* notice it if you replace the cats with a bright red
glasspack!
	- how loud do you want? I've heard annoyingly loud cat-back systems...
	- replacing the cats will require $$$ custom work, and I think it
will mean that you can't get an exhaust system from most major tuners
(correct me if I'm wrong here) unless you have whatever you stick in place
of the catalyst end at exactly the same place as the catalyst ended.

I have to admit, though, I want to hear what a BMW sounds like with glasspacks!
