Just gutting the cat does two bad things for sound quality:  it puts in an
empty chamber which will probably resonate at some engine RPM you don't
particularly want to hear from,  and removing the substrate removes a
significant silencing element.  In short, the tailpipe noise will sound
pretty ratty if this is all you do.  Solution is to replace the cat with a
glasspack resonator.
