And don't forget about the gap you left between the 2002 and the early E30 -
the E21 is probably the cheapest BMW you can get.  Part of the reason is
that, like Jay (no offense meant, of course), most people just don't think
of them, since the other models are more popular and common.  A decent 320i
can run around $1500-$2500.  I got mine for $1000 - it needs some work, but
it runs and drives great.  The downsides of these cars are higher mileage
and they're somewhat prone to rust.  The engine is among the least powerful
you can get in a relatively recent BMW.  But you get what you pay for.  And
parts and upgrades are widely available.
