1995 740i Repairs out of warranty - astronomical?

Having owned this 95 740i for only a couple months now, I decided to bring
it into a shop to have them fix the noisy (broken or at least problematic)
fans for the face vents (they make a chirping non-electric noise while
driving that can be heard over the stereo!) and was told it would be around
$250-$300 in labor plus $70 for each fan (1 or 2) for a total repair
estimate of around $400 just to fix this noise (it's starting to drive me
batty, but $400?!). I was told by a german car repair place in Rockville
MD that these cars "are overengineered and are VERY expensive to maintain
out of warranty, possibly as much as $2500-$5000 per year as each niggling
item will cost a few hundred dollars, and the DME when and if it goes bad
could be $3000-$5000 to fix and the transmission could be $7000!!!! I have
62K miles on the car and had it preinspected by a reputable shop in
Rockville. Am I in for ungodly repairs now that I'm on my own, out of
warranty? Anyone own one of these cars out of warranty and care to share
their experience?

BTW, had to lug my sister, her husband, my new niece and tons of baby stuff
to the airport yesterday and ALL the stuff fit in the car beautifully!
Love the extra room in the 7 series!
