<E28> Clutch helper spring

Today I step into my 535i and on clutch and hear a sprong. Look down and 
see a nut on the floor. Ignore and step on clutch again and more parts 
fall out. Switch to (t)rusty Volvo.

 Later I look at the BMW and see that the little rod holding the clutch 
helper spring has snapped in half (dropping all the parts onto the floor 
mat).

Q: Is this really neccesary? Clutch doesn't feel much different, but 
suppose spring could help bracket life (just had that welded in March) 
and help with bleeding.

Q: Has anyone else replaced this? It is real tight up there and it looks 
like it could be a bear to install.
