Good to hear from BMW Vaterland.

Regarding the diesel oil issue, as pointed out by Shell, the real killer of
the engine and oil is the carbon soot that builds up in the oil. The best
solutions are a big filter and synthetic oil. Using the "standard" oil
until the next change, but I would return to the suggested oil
subsequently.

This thread reminds me of a friend who thought changing oil in his Diesel
was low priority. His oil looked like asphalt by the time he would get
around to changing it, but that motor went 150k miles without a problem
before he sold the car. Amazing resilience in that motor (a Mercedes).
