Pat,
I had the same problem on my 325e. I went to Radio Shack and go the
batteries and made a remote holder. My problem was that I didn't make
one crucial connection. I think there were three separate points that
had to be connected. (It was a while agao.). Your problem seems to be a
missing solder point or cross soldering somewhere.
