The tube and reservoir you mention attaches to the battery to vent
gasses to the
outside.

The E30 is notorious for trunk leaks. Possible culrpits:

    trunk seal (seals in later cars (and new seals) are larger diameter,
seal better)
    taillight seals
    antenna gasket
    nutserts for plate
