"Usual" cause is bad batteries on the SI board. See
http://normgrills.net/bcg/Electrical.html#anchor6436272 for a discussion of
replacing them. I'm starting to see reports from E24 / E28 owners who are
finding bad solder joints on the circuit boards. Apparently 15+ years of
normal vibration are taking their toll. The cure involves sitting down with
a magnifying glass and a soldering iron and reflowing all the joints.
