As I recall with my former automatic, both the "S" and "E" positions were
automatic, the difference being that the program allowed higher revs prior
to shifting while in the "S" position. If you selected a lower gear in
either
of these, you were merely selecting the highest gear and it would freely
shift among that and any lower gear(s) as appropriate.
If you want to use the trans like a manual, you have to pick the "123"
position. In this position, the trans will remain in whatever gear you
select. For example, if you put it in 3rd, you can start from a stop in
3rd gear and it will just stay there, whereas in either "S" or "E", it will
start in 1st, then go to 2nd and then 3rd, but won't go into 4th.
Hopefully, there is really no problem with your trans or trans
computer, but if the above is as you understand it, and you are still
having weird behavior, then you may indeed have a problem which,
unfortunately, I cannot help much more with.
