very common problem with E30 clock units.. easy to remove (all you need is a
pen-knife or long fingernail!!)

pry the trim ring off from around the unit (fingernail or pen-knife), then
you have access to the left and right side of the clock unit where you need
to squeeze the little latches and pull.. the whole unit comes out.

in the back is a large connector.. get some contact cleaner and q-tips and
try your best to clean it up (sort of works). Sometimes people disassemble
the whole thing and re-solder some of the connections, but often just the
rear cleanup does the trick
