E36 internal Fan erratic speeds

I have a friend with an E36 with climate control.
The Fan is doing silly things and he has been
 told by BMW here in the UK
it is the resistor.  Presumably on the controls circuit.
I remember it having a digital control set up.

Is it easy to get at and do?
