Yes, you can do pistons/rings/liners/rod bearings, but not the crank and/or
the mains.

You can also get the timing cover off once the head and oil pan is off, but
if you need to go that far you might as well pull the engine.

I've done it many times, it is not that hard with the right tools and a
little bit of patience. An engine support beam as is commonly used on FWD
cars for transaxle R&R helps make the job a lot easier.
