it in a customers car, the amount of time (which = money) to take it all
apart is so much of the job, that I donbt feel it is worth screwing around.
If it
doesnbt work well, or last too long, then my name is mud and I have an
unhappy
customer. At least if I use new parts, I can be fairly confident that it will
work well and there wonbt be any problems for a little while.
I agree that doing a customer car requires more new parts. If it comes
back, you have to spend time you could be selling to someone else.

One thing I forgot too mention in the disassembly b& (hey it was late when I
wrote that) is when you remove the shift rails, you need to collect the
interlock pins. Pull them out with a small magnet, otherwise they will fall
out. Use
some small tweezers to put them back in. Itbs a little tricky to get it all
back together as the rails have to be positioned just so, but it is doable.

I do not remove the shift rails. There is nothing in the shift assembly
that needs repair normally. The cases will come apart with just the bolt for
the fifth gear fork removed. Getting reverse gear back in is a bit tricky,
but it can be done.
The shift forks may need to come out and get welded. If someone has a
habit of resting a heavy hand on the shift lever, the forks will wear where
they
contact the sliders. In that case, the shift rails need to come out. The
little "footballs" that prevent the transmission from engaging two gears at
once
are a bit tricky and easy to lose.

Years ago, the friend who introduced me to Alfas said to shift as if the
gear shift lever were a plum. If you are shifting hard enough to smash a
plum, you are not doing it right.
