Subject: [alfa] 10548 cam timing

It has been so long since I took this apart that I cant remember how the
cam timing goes. 10548 cams with stock 1750 caps, the timing marks do
not line up perfectly. Is it best to have both marks towards the center
of the engine, advanced I believe, or is the opposite the way to go? I
have carbs, but otherwise stock engine. Thanks,

The cams in a 1750 were timed at 102 degree centers. That should be good
for the cams you have. Just align them exactly on the existing marks. Or if
you cannot get them exactly on the marks, error in the direction of more
overlap. That is the mark on the intake should be slightly toward the spark plug
from perfect alignment. The exhaust cam mark should also be slightly toward
the spark plug.
Pat Braden's Alfa Bible does a pretty good job of describing how to set
cams on various Alfa four cylinder engines. He provides a table of how much to
move the cams from the stock timing marks for various years of smog strangled
Alfas. The 1750 does not require such an adjustment. So far as I know,
retiming the cams to gain performance was first suggested by Joe Benson back in
the mid 1970's.
I have scanned cam timing templates that came from Shankle. I have
posted that file on the Yahoo AlfaRacing list. Or I can send it to anyone who
requests it. Send the request off line, not on the list as it makes it easier to
reply.
Richard, is there anywhere on the Digest to post such a jpg file?
