Any idea what the ago of the Bimmer-badged oil-burner is?  BMW did sell a
variant of the 5-series (524 TD), in the mid-80's.  At 114HP, it wasn't
terribly popular, and few people know it ever existed.  Odder still is the
fact that Ford used this same engine in the Lincoln LSC, where it sold in
even fewer numbers.

Just wondering if it might be the same engine.  The one mentioned above DOES
use a BMW OEM block - same one used in the 320i if I recall correctly.
