Re: [alfa] Grinding valve shims vs valves

Thats definitely the case with shim type motorcycle systems. We grind shims all the time (either very carefully on the flat side of a wheel, or a sanding disc or preferable with a surface grinder) but never grind the valve. The valve is also much more expensive to replace than a shim so I'd rather grind a shim just for that reason.

I'm not an expert, but it was my understanding you DO NOT want to take any material off the valve stem, because it can lead to insufficient clearance between the shim and the valve keepers, and can lead to catastrophic results if the keepers release the valve.

Anyone know for sure?
