When I replaced my first sender I had a hell of a time getting a wrench 
on it.   Turns out the one on my car was 19mm but the new one was 14mm. 
  Once I figured that out, it was pretty obvious why I was having problems.

Still I couldn't get a 19mm down there to get it loose.   I'm not proud, 
but I used a big-ass screwdriver and a hammer and hit the gauge at an 
angle to knock it loose.   I was then able to unscrew it with my hand, 
and screw the new one in, in the same fashion.   Took about 5 minutes 
once I decided to resort to cruder methods.
