Re: [alfa] Bearing questions

Scott, I'm not familiar with 105 front wheel bearings (soon will be though)
but usually an 'outer' wheel bearing is a tapered roller bearing, the inners
are usually a normal roller or ball bearing. The idea is that the inner
takes primarily radial loads (up and down/fore aft) the outers take axial
loads (when cornering).

The outers can usually be quite easily removed for cleaning and re-packing,
at least the bearing cone itself can. Inners usually require a puller to
remove even the inner section.

I'd remove, clean, and inspect the outers on both sides, then grease,
reinstall, and adjust correctly. Note that my Alfetta manual says that the
nut should be done up to leave a few thou clearance between it and the
washer. This allows a slight amount of play at the top of the wheel (cold)
and I've never suffered a bearing failure. So better to be slightly loose
than slightly tight. If the castellations on the nut don't allow you to
tighten the nut to your satisfaction, you can swap washers, then nuts, from
the LHS to RHS which will usually allow a finer adjustment.
