Track down a Sykes-Pickavant on ebay... should run you about $35US,
but well worth the money.

without a valve spring compressor that I could use -- I have two, one a
C-clamp style, another that's similar to a wheel-puller.  Tried to build an
attachment tool for the C-clamp, but then couldn't find enough leverage to
compress the spring.
