"Won't work", and "shouldn't do" are separate discussions. Yes, on my '73
it DID NOT WORK. That's because I had a great flywheel, which wasn't worn,
and the teeth on a 1.1HP starter are not the same pitch, so they would not
mesh with my ring gear. As such, the engine would only turn over some of
the time. This was on a brand new gear reduction starter meant for the '75
to '90 Spiders. Once I consulted a true Alfa mechanic, he told me to simply
install the correct starter (from a series 4) which has the same number of
teeth on the 72-74 ring gear. It works perfect now.
Many people cram the wrong starters on these cars. It is not a good idea.
Also, many '72-'74 had their ring gears converted to the '75-'90 version. I
forget which were 130 and which 131, but it pays to do your homework and
install the correct starter.

i have put at least 40 75=82 starters on 72-74 105's now your telling me it
won't work don't sound right
