Re; changing DOT 5 fluid often:  I think it was one of Pat Braden's
books, although I don't remember which one.  The rationale was that
since DOT 5 fluid is absolutely non-hygroscopic, any moisture in the
system will collect into water globules and probably wind up in some
pipebend where the water will rust a spot through.
