RE: [alfa] rear axle noise

You can sort out rear axle noises by a simple test: driving on a
straight road at a moderate speed, turn the steering wheel briefly as
in a turn and listen for changes in the rear axle noise. This brief
maneuver will momentarily shift weight to one side and if the wheel
bearing on that side is defective, the noise emmanating will increase.
Try it again on the other side. The noise may significantly decrease
when weight is shifted away from the bad side. If these maneuvers don't
reveal anything the wheel bearings are probably OK and you should think
about the differential gears.
