Re: [alfa] rear axle noise
Ed,
With the noise comming and going with engine power, it is probably ring
and pinion noise in the differential.
Rear wheel bearings usually just rumble no matter what the power and get
louder the faster you go. Sometimes the noise will change with loading as you
corner.
But, you need to locate the noise. With the car on jack stands, have
someone inside the car run the thing to make the noise while you check the
differential with a mechanics stethescope (or a piece of garden hose) to
locate where it is coming from. Don't just start changing parts because that
"might" be the problem.
Many years ago I almost went nuts looking for a "Ding" in the drivetrain
on accelleration or decelleration. Turned out to be warn and loose clutch
springs allowing slop in the clutch disc. Made that whole drivetrain ring
like a dinner bell!

Subject: [alfa] rear axle noise
My GTV has a whine that gets louder and increases in pitch as road speed
increases. It goes quiet when I get off the gas. I have assumed that it is a
differential problem and I have been looking for a good used rear axle. But
now I am wondering if the noise could be generated by the rear wheel
bearings. There is a good amount of play in the bearings. I don't want to
replace them if I am going to be replacing the axle, but I don't want to buy
an axle if the problem is wheel bearings. I need some good advice.
Thanks,
