Hi William:

The heat shield on my '74 Spider sure is asbestos, but I don't know what 
the new ones are made from.  The one on my '87 doesn't have any, 
though.  Hurtienne in Germany sells replacements.  While asbestos is 
certainly a hazard, I think it would be tough to inhale any from your heat 
shield.  If you'd like to fabricate something yourself, various heat shield 
materials are available from vendors that sell parts for racing or muscle 
cars, like Jegs.com.
