[alfa] Re: Glunk in Rear End
Hi Robert:
"Bent differential" is about the same as needing new muffler bearings or
Johnson rods. Feel free to pass that along to your "mechanic".
If the noise occurs most during a 1-2 upshift, I'd suggest looking at the
driveshaft center bearing support. By that I mean the large rubber bushing
that surrounds that bearing. It's easily checked by grabbing the
driveshaft near that bearing and seeing how much movement that bushing
allows. Often times you'll see that the rubber has deteriorated and has
separated from its outer mounting bracket. When that problem exists,
usually you'll hear or feel the clunk from the area of the handbrake, more
evident in earlier cars because they've got less padding/carpet/console in
that area of the interior.
Another possibility could be the bearing in the nose of the differential,
and if it's bad its seal likely is, too, and you'll see the oil
leak. Finally, the gear lash in the differential gears might be too
loose. The last two problems should only be looked at by an Alfa shop, but
the center support can be repaired by a good driveshaft shop.

Subject: [alfa] Glunk in Rear End
I own a 1987 Quad. I recently had the u-joints replaced because of a glunk
when I shifted. The glunk still persists sometimes when I shift from first
to second and my mechanic says that it may be from bent differential.
Anyone have any advise?
