Subject: [alfa] cast aluminum clean-up

Gentle Alfisti,
Today the crankcase, sump and front timing cover came back from the machine
shop where they were hot-tanked. The results were not-so-hot. The aluminum has
staining that the tank treatment couldn't remove. Has anyone on the Digest
been successful with other cleaners/brighteners? I've been cautioned against some
caustic cleaners that turn aluminum black. Thanks.

I'm not sure what the hot-tank procedure involves, but it sounds like it should get rid of some pretty stubborn gunk. There are all kinds of readily-available, highly-toxic degreasers out there that can remove some stains from cast aluminum. I happen to be a fan of a product called Citrol. It's non-toxic, but I've been amazed at some of the stains and crap that it can take off metal. In fact, I like the stuff so much (and it's so hard to find) that I convinced my summer employer to sell it through their web page. It's at http://stores.yahoo.com/closeoutsuperstore/cibide16.html if you're interested. (I can't claim *no* financial interest, but I'll say that it's the lowest-markup item they sell.)
