More on the new Spider

Well, discouraging results on the compression test tonight. 75-0-0-80. I'm
about half way to getting the head off. I really haven't touched an 80s
Bosch Spider since the 80's. I forgot what a PITA those heads are to get
off. I'm hoping it's just a head gasket. Especially with the 2
non-compression cylinders next to each other and the 2 outside cylinders
having about the same compression.

A few more details. Appears to be no water in the oil. No coolant left in
the car. There is about an inch of oil and grunge where the head meets the
block, as well as on the front cover and all over the VVT solenoid. The
injectors are lose. Looks like a lazy mechanic left out the hex bolts on
the retaining rings. The oil in the cam galleys is very dirty. No gas in
the oil either, which I'd expect with a holed piston or broken rings.

Any and all suggestions and experiences welcome. More when I get the head
off and inspect whatever damage lies in there.

Another question sort of related. Has anyone managed to get an 80's Spider
through emissions with carbs? I have a line on some early 2L engines, and
I have a Plex, 45DCOE's and other early 2L parts laying around. Much
better performance too. I'm tempted build a high performance early 2L with
the parts I have taking up space if this turns out to be a total rebuild.
