Re: Pulling Engine/Trans from '89 spider
Zach,
Just did this on my 86 spider. Yes, you must get the center rod out of the
way. The shop procedure is to detach the center steering rod at the
steering box. Mine was stuck and I did not have the proper tool to dislodge
the ball joint end. I choose to remove the center rod by simply unscrewing
it. If you do this, you need to carefully mark the original position as
this will affect the overall steering alignment. Alternately, the special
Alfa tool looks like nothing more than the joint removers I have seen at
tool stores, so you could also go that route.

will not clear the tie rod(?) that runs between the frot wheels. Do I need
to pull the ball joints on the rod, or is there something else that I'm not
thinking about here?
