Pulling Engine/Trans from '89 spider

I am pulling the engine from my '89 spider and have hit a snag. The trans will not clear the tie rod(?) that runs between the frot wheels. Do I need to pull the ball joints on the rod, or is there something else that I'm not thinking about here?
 
Any advice is much appreciated.
