bumper refurbishment

In #669 Randy Long asks: "Is it possible to get a stainless rear bumper
from an early 70's spider straightened and polished? Is this a
reasonable thing to consider doing or is it better just to find
another?"

Randy, IF it is horribly mutilated and IF you know where you can get one
in better shape for a 'reasonable' price, go the replacement route.

However, it is amazing what a good straightener / polisher can do with
pretty damaged goods. Obviously the more bent up it is, the more
expensive the straightening will be.

I truly doubt if there are many (any?) Series 2 rear bumpers that
haven't been at least tapped (fairly hard).

I probably would not send it to a bumper specialist (if they even still
exist). My finding was they do a 'fair' job of straightening' but leave
such deep scratches it is difficult to polish out.

This has been said before, but look for a shop who straightens /
polishes items for the Harley and hot-rod (especially low riders) crowd.
They will not except crap work - however they're also willing to pay top
dollar.

How many remember pickup trucks running around with chrome bumpers lined
up on special racks in the back?
